Although Uber is saving both lives and the planet every day, this doesn’t mean they are immune from the law. In France, very specific taxi laws are in place and French authorities claim that Uber has been able to skirt the law by hiring drivers according to their business model. The problem is that in France, in order to get paid to drive passengers, your vehicle must be licensed, which incurs a great deal of fees and taxes.
While Uber is no stranger to run-ins with the law, they are operating in a category that is brand new and most law makers do not know how to treat them. In most cases, the company is on the receiving end of a lawsuit that end up getting settled out of court, and then laws are made that allow the service to operate after the lawmakers see the benefit of having Uber in the community.
However, it appears that Uber executives Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty and Thibaud Simphal will not receive this lenient treatment. Uber has complied with the request to shut down Uber Pop, the French variation of Uber’s popular platform, but the French authorities seem to want to make an example out of these employees, who face up to 5 years in prison for violating the transportation laws.
The trial is still ongoing but make sure to check our news section for updates! Also feel free to check out our write-ups on Uber use here and here.
