A man in Washington DC was billed over $170 for an Uber ride that he does not remember. Mekele Baucom told NBC Washington that on February 5, he called an Uber and after giving the driver his address, he fell asleep. Two hours and 71 miles later, Baucom was still in the car wondering where he was. After reviewing his ride summary, the rider discovered that he was taken on a ride up and down the beltway until he woke up.
In this case, Uber refunded the ride because the driver clearly took advantage of the sleeping rider. Although these cases are rare, they do happen. Given that the destination was less than a mile from the pickup location, the driver probably wanted to increase his earnings from the short trip and took advantage of the situation. While we hope these incidents stop happening, it is best to be prepared both as a rider and as a driver.
